What is environmental law?

A good question to answer when wanting to know if you require legal assistance is what is environmental law and what type of offences can occur. Environmental law can cover but isn’t limited to:

  • Health and safety
  • Dumping of waste
  • Recycling
  • Environmental disasters
  • Climate change
  • Alternative energy sources

When the UK enacted the Environmental Protection Act in 1990, it was the UK’s first piece of legislation that was centred exclusively on the environment. What this piece of law did was define the structure and authority for waste management and the control of emissions into the environment. Furthermore, it spelled out requirements around air pollution, land waste, and smoke, fumes, dust, smell, and noise.

What is environmental law?

In 2008, the UK enacted the Climate Change Act making it the first country in the world to have a long-term framework for cutting carbon emissions. This act communicated and displayed a commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 80% by the year 2050. Most recently, the government took its commitment a step further by making it a goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse emissions by the year 2050.

Despite there being mention of a climate crisis, environmental law remains and is viewed as a very specialist area. Our law firm is one of a few that focuses on this topic and specialises in environmental law. We are not only experts on the topics it involves but our legal team has the experience required to help you navigate your situation and achieve the best possible outcome for your case.
